 Welcome to Year 1/2

This term our topic is:

Sparks and Flames!

‘Our Hook’

Bonfire Night – the children will spend the morning making chocolate apples, foil sparklers and Catherine wheels for an afternoon firework display. The children will watch a video clip and then discuss the sounds they could hear and recreate them using instruments.


We will read and enjoy ‘The Magic Box’ poem written by Kit Wright. The children will develop skills to enable them to write in the same style and create their own poem to describe Bonfire Night.




Our genre of the half term will be ‘poetry.’ Throughout comprehension and shared reading children will listen to and enjoy a wide range of classic and contemporary poetry. We will explore author’s use of rhyme and recurring language and join in with predictable phrases. Children will learn to appreciate rhymes and poems and perform their favourite in groups to their peers.

Our focus for Autumn 2 will be addition and subtraction.

Year 1 Learning Objectives will be to:

  • count to and across 20, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number
  • count, read and write numbers to 20 in numerals
  • read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (–) and equals (=) signs
  • represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20
  • add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including zero
  • solve one-step problems that involve addition and subtraction, using concrete objects and pictorial representations, and missing number problems such as 7 = – 9

Year 2 Learning Objectives will be to:

  • solve problems with addition and subtraction: using concrete objects and pictorial representations, including those involving numbers, quantities and measures
  • applying their increasing knowledge of mental and written methods
  • recall and use addition and subtraction facts to 20 fluently, and derive and use related facts up to 100
  • add and subtract numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations, and mentally, including: a two-digit number and ones, a two-digit number and tens, two two-digit numbers, adding three one-digit numbers
  • show that addition of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and subtraction of one number from another cannot
  • recognise and use the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction and use this to check calculations and solve missing number problems.

Class Maths

Year 1:

  • describe position, direction and movement, including whole, half, quarter and three quarter turns.

Year 2:

  • order and arrange combinations of mathematical objects in patterns and sequences

use mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement, including movement in a straight line and distinguishing between rotation as a turn and in terms of right angles for quarter, half and three-quarter turns (clockwise and anticlockwise).





Children will learn about the Gunpowder Plot through talk for writing strategies, drama and stories. They will be able to sequence the events in chronological order and begin to understand Guy Fawkes’ motive for his actions. As a result, children will make links as to why we celebrate bonfire night today.


Children will look at an aerial photograph of London to describe the route Guy Fawkes took from The Houses of Parliament to the Tower of London when he was arrested. They will use the compass points and directional language to describe this.


They will also plot human and physical landmarks of London on a map of their own and describe their chosen route.



Children will observe and talk about the changes in the weather during Autumn and Winter. They will consider what types of clothing to wear in these seasons and go on a hunt to our local environment to find signs e.g. an acorn.

Children will test the direction of the wind and compare rainfall length.

Music is taugh through weekly class music lessons with our specialist teacher and assemblies.

'Dance and Games'

Through Dance lessons with a speacialist teacher childen use simple movement patterns to perform dance routines.

Through Games children will master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as devleoping balance, agility, and co-ordination and begin to apply these in a range of activities.

Children will work cooperatively in teams to practise different skills associated with simple games (e.g co-ordinating throwing and catching.

Children will learn about the key teachings in the Bible for Christians. They will also read, enjoy and participate in the retelling of the Christmas story, which will be enhanced through our KS1 Christmas performance.



Throughout a series of lessons, children will develop a set of skills needed to create a London skyline on bonfire night, depicting the colourful skies and burning fires.
